The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has a working arrangement at a national level with the Department of Education (DoE) to support Mathematics and Science learners in promoting the vision for the Dinaledi schools. |

Part of this agreement involves additional tuition in Mathematics, Physical Science and Accounting. In this regard the DST/Thuthuka Maths and Science camps have been running since 2002 in the various provinces. |

RECRUITMENT OF LEARNERS FOR THE THUTHUKA CAMPS |
2.1 |
Candidates for this camp should be recruited mainly from the Dinaledi schools and Focus schools, such as the Business, Commerce and Management (BCM) and Engineering focus schools. |
2.2 |
However the Western Cape Education Department suggests that this opportunity should be extended to other schools also. |
2.3 |
A total of 200 Black learners (African, Coloured and Indians) in Grades 11 and 12 will be selected, based on the criteria below: |
2.3.1 |
A gender breakdown of 55% females and 45% males |
2.3.2 |
70% Mathematics and Science and 30% Mathematics and Accounting |
2.3.3 |
Learners who have obtained at least 40% in Mathematics |

3.1 |
The camp will take place from 28 June 2009 to 5 July 2009 at the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology. |
3.2 |
In addition to tutorials in Mathematics, Science and Accounting, excursions will be arranged to, amongst others, the MTN Science Centre, ESKOM Nuclear Power Station and The South African Astronomical Observatory. |
