1. The Revised National Curriculum Statement Grades R-9 (Schools) states that "The additional language should be introduced as a learning area in Grade 4."
2. It is also stated in the above document that learners may take an African language for a minimum of three years in the General Education and Training phase. In some circumstances, it may be taken as a second additional language.
3. Contrary to the above policy requirements, some schools introduce Xhosa Second Additional Language as a subject for the first time in Grade 8 or Grade 9. This means that learners have no foundational skills and background in the Xhosa language. In addition, it becomes a mammoth task for them in Grades 10, 11 and 12, where they must meet the specific continual assessment requirement of 25% and the examination requirement of 75%.
