1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 The first National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations were conducted in November 2008. In terms of the Regulations Pertaining to the Conduct, Administration and Management of Assessment for the National Senior Certificate (Government Gazette No. 31337, August 2008), a candidate who fails to comply with the requirements for School Based Assessment, but who provides a valid reason for not doing so, may be granted another opportunity to be assessed in the assigned task(s).
1.2 The learner is therefore required to submit outstanding assessment task/s or present himself or herself for School Based Assessment before 16 March 2009.

2. IMPROVING OF SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT MARKS FOR LIFE ORIENTATION
2.1 In the case of Life Orientation, the final promotion mark is based on the school-based assessment mark only, as there is no supplementary examination in this subject.
2.2 If a candidate wishes to improve his or her mark for Life Orientation in order to achieve the NSC, then that candidate may be granted an opportunity to submit the task(s) outstanding or a new complete portfolio of assessment, as agreed upon with the teacher concerned, before 16 March 2009.

3. SPECIAL PROCEDURES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF OUTSTANDING SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT, INCLUDING PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASKS AND LIFE ORIENTATION TASKS.
3.1 Applications for re-assessment of School Based Assessment must be done through the school. The application form is herewith attached as Addendum A. The school must submit completed application forms to the education district office for recording purposes.
3.2 The education district office must submit these forms to the Directorate: Examinations Administration (for recording purposes) by Wednesday, 25 February 2009 to the address as indicated in paragraph 3.7.
3.3 Learners must be allowed to continue with the school-based assessment process.
3.4 Parents and candidates must take full responsibility for submitting outstanding assessment tasks to the school by 16 March 2009. They must therefore be requested to contact the school immediately to make arrangements for the submission of those tasks.
3.5 The school must set the submission dates for tasks and ensure that the marking and moderation are in accordance with national and provincial policies.
3.6 The education district office is required to make the necessary arrangements for the moderation of the assessment of portfolios.
3.7 Education district officials must ensure that moderation of these tasks is conducted at school and district levels. The moderated final marks must be submitted by Friday, 3 April 2009 to the following address:

3.8 School principals and teachers are kindly requested to support candidates who have not completed their school-based assessments.
