1. Introduction
1.1 Government Gazette 29626 of 12 February 2007, stipulates that the CTA will be the only formal Grade 9 assessment for Term 4. For 2009, all schools were required to administer CTA: Section A from 5 October 2009.
1.2 CTA: Section B is the formal pen-and-paper task (examination) and is conducted from 16 November 2009 to 30 November 2009.
2. CTA: Section A - isiXhosa Second Additional Language
2.1 The WCED has received several complaints regarding the level of difficulty of isiXhosa Second Additional Language question paper for Section A of the CTA.
2.2 In order to ensure fairness and consistency in the resulting of Grade 9 learners in this learning area, the WCED has made a decision to allow a special concession for CTA: Section A.
2.3 Schools offering isiXhosa Second Additional Language are advised to use the marks awarded to each learner for school based assessment (SBA) during the year to calculate the learner's final mark for Section A of the CTA. In other words, the learners' marks for Section A of the CTA (120 marks) will be calculated from the marks achieved by the learner for SBA throughout the year.
3. CTA: Section B - isiXhosa Second Additional Language
3.1 The WCED also took a decision to set a provincial paper for CTA: Section B.
3.2 The provincially set CTA: Section B will be sent to all schools to replace the nationally set CTA: Section B.
3.3 Schools are therefore required to use the provincially set paper for the isiXhosa SAL examination that is scheduled for 30 November 2009. The writing of the provincially set CTA: Section B for isiXhosa Second Additional Language is compulsory for all schools offering the learning area.
4. Completion of the recording sheets for isiXhosa SAL
4.1 Schools are required to capture the marks recorded for all formal SBA tasks completed by each learner during the year, the learner's calculated mark for Section A and the mark achieved by each learner for Section B.
4.2 Learners' marks for Section A (120 marks) will be calculated from the marks achieved by the learners for SBA through out the year.
4.3 Learners' marks for Section B (80 marks) will be captured based on the actual achievement of the learners in the CTA: Section B.
4.4 The Grade 9 resulting program will automatically calculate each learner's promotion result accordingly.
