1. The primary role of WCED is to provide a quality education to the highest possible number of learners in the Western Cape Province. It is envisaged that through the provision of quality education, learners will be able to reach their full potential both personally and professionally and be able to participate in and strengthen the country's democracy.
2. In addition, the WCED and its partners in government, the private sector and civil society are engaged in wide-ranging educational and skills development programmes as a means of ensuring that learners who leave the system are skilled, adaptable and able to access the labour market and/or enter an FET college or a university.
3. A report on the programmes and key challenges within the WCED has been written and reflects the learner enrolment and performance as at 30th August 2008. It gives a broad overview and provides information on the skills development offered by the WCED.
4. This report can be used as a tool by principals and educators to provide insight as to what the WCED offers to direct and assist learners in mapping their career pathways.
