1. The WCED is pleased to announce that 50 bursaries are to be made available to teachers who wish to obtain the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) in School Librarianship.
2. Twenty-five of the bursaries will be for part-time studies during term time, suitable for teachers in the rural areas (Group 1). The remaining 25 bursaries will be allocated for attendance at courses during school vacations, more suitable for teachers from rural areas (Group 2).
3. The aim of the course is to improve teachers’ qualifications in the organisation and management of school libraries.
4. The course is designed for teachers who have no qualifications in School Librarianship and who are interested in the development of school libraries.
5. This ACE course will be offered part-time from July 2008, and over a period of two years. It will lead to an NQF Level 6 qualification.
6. Each bursary will cover tuition and registration fees, as well as accommodation fees for teachers from rural areas.
7. Transport costs to and from the training venue will be covered by the WCED.
8. The course will be offered by the University of the Western Cape.
9. The first contact session for both groups (rural and urban) will take place during the week of 7 to 11 July 2008.
10. The following will be given preference in the selection process:
  • Teachers with no library qualification
  • Teachers from rural areas for acceptance in Group 2
11. Teachers who wish to be considered for a course bursary are requested to complete Annexures A and B and submit them to the Department, via their school principals. Applications must reach the following address by Friday, 30 May 2008:

12. Copies of these forms are also available at the WCED's Client Services section on the second floor of Grand Central Towers, Cape Town.
13. Kindly note that
  • no late, incomplete or illegible applications will be considered;
  • only original documents or certified copies of them will be accepted; and
  • no faxed applications will be accepted.
14. The Bursary Committee will consider and prioritise all applications, and then make recommendations for the awarding of the bursaries.
15. Each successful applicant will be expected to enter into a formal agreement with the WCED to render a year’s service for each year for which the bursary is awarded, and to comply with the other stipulations outlined in the agreement.
