1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) values the commitment of our teachers to broadening their knowledge of trends in education and to developing their teaching skills.

2. The WCED is prepared to assist teachers financially to study part-time towards their first post-graduate degree, B Ed Hons, specialising in any field of education study, except school management.

3. Teachers who have already registered for the 2008 academic year are invited to apply for financial assistance in the form of a bursary for their remaining year(s) of study towards the completion of the B Ed Hons degree.

4. The granting of the bursary is subject to the applicant
  • being a student registered either with an accredited tertiary institution in the Western Cape or with UNISA;
  • being in his or her first or second year of study;
  • being a teacher in the permanent employ of the WCED;
  • not being currently in receipt of a state bursary or any other bursary; and
  • being a South African citizen.
The bursary will cover only registration and tuition fees.

5. Each application for a bursary must consist of the following documents:
  • A completed study bursary application form (Annexure A)
  • A completed agreement form (Annexure B)
  • Proof of registration for the 2008 academic year
  • Documentary proof of study costs, i.e. registration fees and tuition fees, for the 2008 academic year (This information will be obtainable from the tertiary institution with which you have registered.)
6. Applications must be submitted to the following address by Thursday, 12 June 2008:
Head: Education
(For attention: Mr TP Davids)
Directorate: Internal Human Capital Development
Western Cape Education Department
Private Bag X9114
Cape Town

Applications may also be posted into the box marked "B Ed Hons" in the main entrance foyer of the WCED Head Office at Grand Central Towers, Cape Town.

7. Application forms and agreement forms have been attached to this minute. Copies of these forms are also available at the WCED's Client Services section on the second floor of Grand Central Towers, Cape Town.

8. Kindly note that
  • no late, incomplete or illegible applications will be considered;
  • only original documents or certified copies of them will be accepted; and
  • no faxed applications will be accepted.
9. The Bursary Committee will consider and prioritise all applications, and then make recommendations for the awarding of the bursaries. Bursary allocations will not exceed, but will not necessarily cover, the full registration and tuition fees. The number of applications received and the funds made available will determine the number of bursaries awarded.

10. Each successful applicant will be expected to enter into a formal agreement with the WCED to render a year’s service for each year for which the bursary is awarded, and to comply with the other stipulations outlined in the agreement.

11. Please ensure that the content of this minute is brought to the attention of all teachers.
