1. The Human Capital Development Strategy (HCDS) seeks to ensure that the youth of the Western Cape are developed and supported so that they succeed in achieving their dreams.
2. Different approaches and strategies are employed by the WCED (the lead department for the HCDS) to ensure that the youth in our schools do not miss out on opportunities that are available, not only in the province, but nationally and internationally.
3. It is accepted that many of our learners in the country are not performing well in their Grade 12 examinations and this is a cause for concern for many in the education sector. There are various reasons contributing to this challenge.
4. Grade 12 is regarded as a very difficult and demanding year, and learners who attempt their Grade 12 examinations are often in need of extra support and advice.
5. A collection of interviews with some of the top matriculants who have shared their views and tips for success is attached. We encourage learners, teachers and all involved in Grade 12 this year to pay heed to the factors that influenced their success. Our 2007 matriculants offer sound practical tips. The central theme is the importance of hard work, sacrifice, commitment and perseverance.
6. This booklet is for all the 2008 Grade 12 learners and it is hoped that it will motivate and encourage the learners to work hard and to do their best so that they can succeed.
