1. In the past the Department appointed examiners and internal moderators to set the question papers for the Senior Certificate examinations. The examiners also managed the marking of scripts at the marking centre, whilst the internal moderators assured the standard of marking.
2. As from November 2008, the National Department of Education will be responsible for setting all question papers for the National Senior Certificate examinations, with the exception of the literature papers, which will be set by the provincial education departments.
3. Applications are thus invited from teachers who would like to serve as chief markers, deputy chief markers and internal moderators for the marking of the scripts of the National Senior Certificate examinations of November 2008 and 2009 and the March 2009 and 2010 supplementary examinations. Successful applicants will be appointed for a period of two years and this appointment may be renewed, depending on the satisfactory performance of the incumbent.
4. The following is the process involved in the appointment of markers:

4.2 The Department will appoint one moderator, one chief marker and one deputy chief marker for each subject with a large number of candidates. Expertise and experience in the previous examinations will be the decisive factors in the selection of panels.
4.3 Prospective moderators, chief markers and deputy chief markers may apply, using the attached form, for the subject(s) which they are currently teaching. A list of the subjects for which applications are invited is attached as ANNEXURE B.
