1. A career guidance process should be in place at schools that is relevant to the age group of the learners and that links with the career guidance processes already being implemented at the schools.
2. One of the specific focuses of Life Orientation, one of the eight learning areas in the General Education and Training Band (GET), is orientation to the world of work (GET Grades 7-9). This focus area ensures that the learners will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and values required to prepare for and participate effectively in the world of work.
3. All teachers should be trained to become confident and competent in the career guidance that they offer to learners.
4. Schools must also be supported with the streaming of Grade 7 learners into the relevant focus schools, so that the learner make-up of the focus school reflects the ethos of that specific focus school.
5. A training course in the PACE: World of Work programme will be offered to Grade 7 Life Orientation teachers who have not received training in this programme before.
6. ONE teacher per school is invited to attend the training session that will take place on Saturday, 15 March 2008, at the CEI, at the Cape Teachers' Institute, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River.
7. The course will commence promptly at 8:30 in the morning and will end at 16:00 in the afternoon.
8. Teachers from the rural districts will be reimbursed for travelling expenses. Teachers who intend to claim for these expenses must have the following information available at the course:
  • PERSAL number
  • Engine capacity of the vehicle used and year of manufacture
  • The kilometre distance from the school to the venue
9. Teachers from the rural districts who require accommodation must make their own arrangements. These educators must submit their claims before they leave on the day of the course.
10. Principals are requested to fax the completed registration form, Annexure A, to the Life Orientation Senior Curriculum Planner, Mrs DJ Christiaans, at 021 467 2258, by no later than 29 February 2008.
11. Principals are reminded that attendance of the above courses may be taken into consideration when completing teachers' IQMSs.
12. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of the Life Orientation teachers.
13. Please contact Mrs D Christiaans, Senior Curriculum Planner for Life Orientation (FET) at 021 467 2589 or email: dchristi@pgwc.gov.za for more information.
