1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) deems it critical that all schools should have a 37 week work schedule to ensure effective teaching and learning in the classroom for 2008.
2. The following is an extract from the LEARNING PROGRAMME GUIDELINES issued by the National Department of Education:

"It is recommended that the teachers of a subject at a school or cluster of schools first put together a broad subject outline (Subject Framework) for the three grades to arrive at an understanding of the content of the subject and the progression which needs to take place across the grades…. Thereafter, teachers teaching the same grade need to work together to develop a year long Work Schedule for their subject. The Work Schedule should indicate the sequence in which the content ... will be presented for the subject…. Finally, individual teachers should design Lesson Plans using the grade-specific Work Schedule as the starting point." (LPG, p. 4)

3. Pacesetters for Grades 10 - 12 were sent to all schools in November 2007. These serve as exemplars of how the content may be sequenced and cover all the relevant learning outcomes and assessment standards. Hence these pacesetters could be used as work schedules.
4. A questionnaire regarding work schedules for Grades 10 - 12 in all subjects is attached (Annexure A). Principals are requested to ensure that this questionnaire is completed by the relevant subject heads or head of departments at the school and returned by 27 February 2008 to Head Office for the attention of Mr CR Smith, e-mail: crsmith@pgwc.gov.za or fax: 021 467 2620.
