1. The LOK Symposium has a new look in 2009! Matters in the LOK camp have changed (and improved) significantly since a partnership was forged on 16 September 2008 with the SBA (Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans) as chief sponsor for 2009. It is thus with great pleasure that the Letterkundeondersteuningskomitee (LOK) hereby invites all teachers of Afrikaans for Grade 12 learners to the 2009 symposium, which will be presented at the University of the Western Cape on Friday, 20 February 2009, from 12:30 to 17:45 and Saturday, 21 February 2009, from 9:00 to 13:00.
2. The main aim of the symposium is to support the teaching of literature, but there will also be a focus on other disciplines such as speaking and writing. Film study will receive special attention at the 2009 symposium with the well-known Leon van Nierop as presenter. The provisional symposium programme is already available on the FET Afrikaans website (http://curriculum.pgwc.gov.za), and will be replaced by 02 February 2009 with the final programme.
3. The registration fee for the 2009 symposium is R50,00 per person. Interested persons can deposit this amount in the SBA's ABSA cheque account. The account number is 550145847, branch code 506009. Cheques must be made out to Stigting vir Afrikaans. The SBA will, in future, be handling the administrative and logistical arrangements for the LOK Symposium.
4. Prospective participants must complete the accompanying registration form (Annexure A) and fax it, together with the proof of payment, to Ms Christine Francke of the SBA at 021 481 8332 by no later than 3 December 2008. No late registrations will be accepted. (The SBA's telephone number is 021 481 8304.)
5. Included is also an order form (Annexure B) for LOK support guides that must be filled in by teachers and faxed for the attention of Christine Francke at the above number. The guides will only be available in e-format. A brochure with extracts from the guides will be distributed to schools in January 2009.
6. The LOK support guides are written as supplementary to the information that is already available in the prescribed books, and focus on the practical implementation of the NCS in the classroom. A teacher and learner guide per prescribed Grade 12 book is being developed for all three of the language levels (HL, FAL and SAL). A compact disk (CD), which includes the teacher and learner guide, will be available for each book and can be ordered at R50 per CD. The order form must be faxed together with the registration form to Christine Francke by no later than 3 December 2008.
7. To ensure that the arrangements for the LOK Symposium run smoothly, teachers are requested to keep to the deadlines.
8. Please bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all those concerned.
