1. Circular 0011/2008 deals with the practical assessment tasks (PATs) for the 2008 National Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
2. Section 3.3 of the above-mentioned circular states that the PATs for Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology constitute 25% of the total promotion/certification mark for the respective subjects.
3. The subject assessment guidelines for both subjects state that the PAT is part of the external assessment and should be administered on a continuing basis according to set due dates for the completion of each stage of the PAT.
4. According to paragraph 4(8) of Chapter 3 of the National Policy on the Conduct, Administration and Management of the National Senior Certificate: A qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), as published in the Government Gazette, Vol. 505 (No. 30048 of July 6, 2007) the absence of an internal assessment mark will result in the candidate registered for the particular subject receiving an "incomplete" result. This holds true for the absence of an assessment mark for the PAT for CAT and IT.
5. Schools/Teachers who offer Computer Applications Technology and/or Information Technology as part of their National Senior Certificate in 2008 must submit their Summary Recording Sheets for the PAT and school-based assessment (SBA) tasks (Grade 12) on or before 17 October 2008 to their respective curriculum support officials as indicated in the table below. Due dates for learners to submit their final phases of the PAT should be set in advance in order for teachers to assess the relevant PAT phases. (Note: Moderation will be conducted in accordance with the demarcation of the previous EMDCs):

6. Heads of all institutions preparing candidates who offer CAT and/or IT for the National Senior Certificate examinations in 2008 are hereby instructed to communicate in writing the due date for submission of candidates' PATs and SBA tasks, as set by the school, to said candidates and their parents. Such communication to parents must include a section (reply slip or suchlike) on which parents must acknowledge receipt.
7. The above-mentioned acknowledgements of receipt must be filed as evidence of notification of the content of this minute.
