1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is undertaking a special project to supply all Grade 12 learners in ordinary public schools and special schools with 3 prescribed literature books for Home Language and 2 prescribed literature books for First Additional Language.
2. This project supports the National Senior Certificate literature examinations (Paper 2) in 2009.
3. Publishers have been invited to display their approved literature books at book exhibitions in the districts from 2nd to 12th June 2008. A one-hour presentation, outlining the requirements of the National Senior Certificate prescribed literature examinations for Grade 12s for 2009 to 2011 will be held at each venue. Details of the venues and district contact persons are provided in the attached Addendum C.
4. Language teachers are urged to take the attached lists of prescribed works to the book exhibition and to use the opportunity to discuss their selection of prescribed works with colleagues and curriculum officials.
5. This curriculum minute is accompanied by the national literature lists for Grade 12. A national selection team, consisting of education officials, unions and teachers, has screened the works, using a range of criteria, including compliance with the NCS. Prescribed works must be selected from the attached lists (Addendum A). The WCED will not pay for books that are not selected from these lists.
6. Attached please find the following:

7. Schools must make their selection for Home Language and/or First Additional Language and submit it on the requisition form (Addendum B). Schools are required to provided the following on the requisition form:
  1. Their chosen prescribed work for each of 3 genres for literature study in Home Language
  2. Their chosen prescribed work for each of the 2 genres selected by the school for First Additional Language
  3. The number of books required for each genre
    (Note that the order for Grade 12 in 2009 must not exceed the Grade 12 enrolment for 2008 by more than 20%, unless written justification is sent to the Director: Curriculum FET and is approved before 15 June 2008.)
  4. Their nominated approved book supplier
    (The chosen book supplier will be contracted by the WCED to deliver the books to the school. An updated list of approved book suppliers was provided in Procurement Management Minute 0007/2008, dated 21 April 2008.)
Submitted requisitions that do not meet the requirements listed above will be returned.
8. The requisition form (Addendum B) must be signed by the principal and chairperson of the governing body, and then hand-delivered or posted to the appropriate address below:

Requisitions must reach these addresses by no later than noon on 25th June 2008.
9. Once the books have been supplied, they must be included in the school’s inventory, stamped with the official school stamp and issued to learners on or before the first day of school in 2009. Learners must be instructed in how to care for the books and a system must be devised for the return of the books at the end of the year. WCED officials will monitor the implementation of these requirements when they visit schools.
10. The WCED is pleased to be able to provide these textbooks to schools and trusts that they will be used well to provide sound education.
