1. A mini-conference is to be held for Geography and Social Sciences teachers on 12 and 13 September 2008. The conference theme is “A changing geography for a changing world” and the conference will focus on the development of the subject, as well as methodologies for teaching, learning and assessment in the geography classroom.
2. The conference will be held in the Main Hall of the University of the Western Cape in Modderdam Road, Bellville. The two-day programme will be made available once interest in the conference has been established. (Attached, as Annexure A, is a list of possible conference topics. Any suggestions for additional topics will be appreciated.).
3. Teachers attending the mini- conference must register with their relevant curriculum adviser at their district office. The attached registration form (Annexure B) must be submitted to the curriculum adviser by 13 June 2008. No late registrations will be accepted.

4. Travel and accommodation expenses
4.1 Teachers travelling from beyond a radius of 100 kilometres from the conference venue may arrange their own accommodation and claim a maximum of R 750 per day (all-inclusive - dinner, bed and breakfast).
4.2 Teachers who prefer to arrange private accommodation with family or friends may claim a maximum of R 200 per day. In such cases, a receipt must be attached to the claim submitted.
4.3 The WCED will not reimburse teachers for expenses incurred through the making of private telephone calls or the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

5. Claiming for expenses
5.1 Teachers must submit their claims to the conference manager at the conference venue at the end of the conference. It is, therefore, essential that each teacher brings the following to the conference on the second day:
  • His or her Persal number
  • Registration details of the vehicle he or she used for transport
  • His or her bank account details
  • All invoices relating to travel and accommodation expenditure
5.2 Teachers making use of public transport (bus and train services) must attach official receipts to their claims. Where teachers make use of mini-bus taxis, either receipts issued or a letter from their principal, stating expenditure incurred, must be attached.
5.3 Each teacher must submit a separate verified claim.
