The Department of Economic Development and Tourism in the Western Cape has developed a guide to assist Grade 10 to 12 learners in selecting a career in tourism at the end of the Further Education and Training Band (FET).

The guide will provide Grade 10 to 12 learners with information regarding various careers in the tourism industry and seeks to support young people in making decisions about studies beyond Grade 12.

The career guide will profile 24 careers in tourism, which have been chosen in consultation with THETA, the tourism skills authority. The careers that are profiled require skills that are most in demand by the tourism industry.

Every institution offering Tourism as an FET subject will receive 200 copies of the booklet, which should be distributed among the Grade 10 to 12 learners.

The booklet will be delivered from 1 June 2008 and should be disseminated by the Tourism educator at the institution.

Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of the Tourism educators.
