With reference to CIRCULAR S1 OF 2008, issued by the national Department of Education, please take note of the following:

1. Grade 12 learners who are offering Visual Arts have to select six of ten themes listed in the Learning Programme Guideline document for Visual Arts of January 2008.
2. The examination panel selected a total of six different artists in each category and learners have to study one of the artists from the list. However, it was found that the works of one artist in the category, “Multi Media”, and two artists in the category, “Gender Issues” in South African Art, are not suitable for school purposes. The artists are the following:
  • Mr Steven Cohen in the “Multi Media” and “Gender Issues” categories
    in South African Art
  • Mr Peet Pienaar in the “Gender Issues” category in South African Art
The works of the above-mentioned artists must be removed from the Learning Programme Guideline document for Visual Arts of 2008 with immediate effect.
3. The Learning Programme Guideline document for Visual Arts of 2008, must be amended as follows:

Page 57:

In the first column, under the sub-headings Multi Media, alternative contemporary and popular art forms in South Africa, the artist Steven Cohen, in the second column, must be removed.

Page 58:

In the first column, under the sub-heading Gender Issues in South African Art, the artists Steven Cohen and Peet Pienaar, in the second column, must be removed.

4. Teachers must be informed that they must cautious and sensitive to learners and their families in the selection of visual material from the Internet or any other media.
5. The above changes will be made to the applicable documents which are available on the Thutong portal and the Department of Education websites.
6. Principals are kindly requested to bring this notice to the attention of all relevant persons.
