1. Below are the procedures that must be followed during the conducting of the final NSC practical examinations in the following subjects:

(a) Visual Arts
(b) Design
(c) Music

2. VISUAL ARTS AND DESIGN
2.1 The 2008 final practical examination question papers for Visual Arts and Design, Visual Arts Paper 2 (Practical) and Design Paper 2 (Practical) will each consist of the following two sections:
Section A: Source Book / Workbook
Section B: The Artwork.
2.2 The practical examination question paper for Visual Arts has already been delivered to all schools offering this subject. The practical examination question paper for Design accompanies this minute. The purpose of this early distribution of the question paper is to inform candidates about the research they need to undertake in order to answer Section A of the question paper. Candidates must sign a register on receipt of the question paper.
2.3 During Term 3, candidates must complete sufficient research and collate all appropriate material in readiness for Section A of the examination question paper. Section A may be administered either during teaching time or after school hours. Section A of the examination must be completed prior to the start of Section B of the practical examination.
2.4 Section B of the examination must be completed between 17 September 2008 and 17 October 2008 at the examination venue and during the normal teaching time. It is suggested that block sessions of 4 - 6 hours be arranged over a number of days until all candidates have completed their artwork or the arts discipline required e.g. ceramic sculpture.
2.5 There must be strict invigilation by the Visual Arts and/or Design teacher during the conducting of the examination.
2.6 The senior curriculum planner and the curriculum adviser will ensure that all practical work is marked and moderated timeously. The moderation dates will soon be finalised and communicated to all schools offering Visual Arts and Design.

3. MUSIC
3.1 The following procedure must be followed for Music Paper 2 (Music Comprehension).
3.2 The WCED will provide each school or examination centre with a compact disk (CD) in advance.
3.3 Schools may not make copies of the CD and only the original CD may be used.
3.4 Two days before the examination, the Music teacher must test the CD and the sound equipment that is to be used. All the tracks must be tested.
3.5 If the CD is faulty, Mr Clive Berry, of the Examinations Directorate must be informed immediately at tel. no. 021 467 2265.
3.6 On the day of the examination, the Music teacher must check the CD an hour before the commencement of the examination.
3.7 The Music teacher must ascertain from the question paper how many tracks must be played and the duration of each track.
3.8 Each track must be played only once to the candidates. Under no circumstances may the playing of a track be repeated at the request of candidates.
3.9 This examination must be completed in 1½ hours.
3.10 All candidates must leave the examination room after the scheduled time has expired. No candidate may be allowed to leave before the scheduled time has lapsed.

4. Adherence to the above-mentioned procedures is critical in ensuring the credibility of these examinations.
5. The contents of this minute must be brought to the attention of the Grade 12 teachers concerned.
6. We thank you for your support and cooperation.
