1. The national Department of Education has informed the WCED of the following urgent instructions regarding the conducting of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations for certain subjects:

2. Second Additional Language Paper 1 (Official Languages)
2.1 The duration for all Second Additional Language Paper 1 examinations has been changed from 2 hours to 2½ hours. This has been done in order to accommodate the extended length of Paper 1, which now includes the literature.
2.2 All chief invigilators must be informed of this change, since both the question paper and the examination timetable will indicate 2 hours. Candidates, however, must be allowed to write for the 2½ hours.
2.3 Principals must please ensure that this change is effected on the day of the examination.

3. Agricultural Management Practices
3.1 Agricultural Management Practices will be written on Tuesday, 2 December 2008 at 9:00.
3.2 This question paper covers all the production enterprises offered by all candidates in the country. It is therefore important that the subject teacher is present to support the chief invigilator prior to the writing of this paper.
3.3 The subject teacher must be allowed to guide the candidates, using the index page, in the selection of the production enterprises offered by the school.
3.4 Once this selection has been made, the subject teacher must leave the examination venue.
3.5 Principals must ensure that this instruction is adhered to in this subject.

4. Non-official languages
4.1 The oral examination for Spanish and Italian should be conducted immediately after the completion of the Paper 2 examination, which has been scheduled to be written on Thursday, 30 October, at 14:00. The Spanish and Italian oral examinations should therefore commence at 16:30.
4.2 The IEB will select candidates whose portfolios are to be made available for moderation for all non-official languages and will inform the WCED in due course. Schools with candidates that are writing the non-official languages must retain all portfolios of these candidates. The WCED will contact the schools as soon as the names of the candidates for moderation have been announced by the IEB.

5. The WCED thanks you for your co-operation and support in ensuring the effective conduct and management of the NSC examinations.
