1. COMPLETION OF MARK SHEETS
1.1 The computerised mark sheets for continuous assessment are enclosed, except for those subjects listed on the enclosed Annexure A. (Mark sheets for the subjects listed on Addendum A are sent directly to curriculum advisers.)
1.2 The enclosed mark sheets must be made available to the curriculum advisers on the day of moderation. The moderated marks must be transferred to the Departmental mark sheets by the curriculum advisers.
2. AWARDING OF CASS MARKS

A mark must be awarded to every candidate whose examination number appears on the mark sheet. This also applies to learners who

  • were expelled or temporarily suspended from school.
  • have applied for a change of centre.
  • were absent for a prolonged period during the year.
  • were absent on the day of moderation.
  • were registered for a subject at another school or centre.
3. LEARNERS WHO ARE ABSENT AND THOSE WITH NO CASS MARKS
3.1 Under no circumstances may a candidate's marks be omitted. If a candidate has submitted one or more CASS tasks, but has not handed in one or more of the remaining required tasks, then the candidate receives " 0" for each task not handed in. The candidate is penalised for work not done.

Example:

TASKSTASK 1TASK 2TASK 3TASK 4TASK 5
MAX. MARK55302040
MARK AWARDED4016020

Thus 4+0+16+0+20 = 40/100 (40%)

3.2 Learners who completed no CASS tasks at all during the year are to be given a "999" on the mark sheet. This is the only instance where a "999" may be entered on the CASS mark sheets.
3.3 Where a candidate was absent with a medical certificate for any task, then the candidate's maximum CASS mark is adjusted accordingly and the candidate is given a mark out of a reduced total. That adjusted mark is then converted to a mark out of the correct maximum mark.

Example:

TASKSTASK 1TASK 2TASK 3TASK 4TASK 5
MAX. MARK55302040
MARK AWARDED4016020

Thus 4+16+20 = 40/75 Converted to 54/100 (54%)

4. SUBJECT AND GRADE CHANGES

In cases where a subject or grade change has been approved by the Department, the change (subject name and grade) must be indicated next to the candidate's name and examination number. Write "888" in the mark column and write the candidate's mark in the column next to the mark column. (See attached example)

5. LEARNERS WITH SPEECH AND/OR HEARING BARRIERS

Learners with speech and/or hearing barriers must, in lieu of the oral mark, receive a pro rata mark based on the marks they scored in their written work for the 2007 June and September examinations.

6. RESPONSIBILITY OF PRINCIPALS REGARDING COMPLETION OF MARK SHEETS

Principals must ensure that all Senior Certificate learners in their schools have been given the required CASS marks. CASS marks submitted after completion of moderation will not be accepted by the Department, unless there is a valid reason for the late submission.

7. RETURN DATE

Assessment co-ordinators must ensure that the completed mark sheets reach the Directorate: Examinations by 9 November 2007.

8. REFERRING QUERIES

Principals are requested not to refer learners without CASS marks directly to the Department after the release of the Matric results. The correct procedure, which is via the assessment co-ordinators at the EMDCs, must be followed.
