1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in conjunction with the Western Cape Language Committee and the Centre for the Book, wishes to encourage creative writing by learners. Hence, Grade 6 to Grade 9 Language teachers are invited to participate in Creative Writing Workshops offered in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa. This confirms the communication faxed to schools in July 2007 by the Centre for the Book.
2. The purpose of these creative writing workshops is to provide teachers with a variety of creative skills which will, in turn, help them to improve learners' creative writing and thinking.
3. There will be three separate workshops, and each workshop will cater for all three language groups. The first will be held in Worcester's EMDC hall on 13 October 2007. The other two workshops will be held at the Centre for the Book at 65 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town on Saturday, 20 October 2007 and on Saturday, 27 October 2007. All three workshops will begin at 09:30 and finish at 16:00. Refreshments and a light meal will be provided.
4. Workshop content
4.1 The programme on each of the three days will begin with a plenary session at 09:30, before the start of the individual language workshops, which will begin at 10:00 and end at 16:00.
4.2 Teachers will be introduced to character, free-writing and first things exercises, and will be writing about themselves.
4.3 A variety of writing genres, such as prose, scripts and poetry, will be covered.
5. Language teachers interested in attending the workshops on one of the above-mentioned dates must complete the attached Annexure A and fax it to Mr M. Espin at fax number 021 424 1484 or at e-mail address mark.espin@nlsa.ac.za by Friday, 21 September 2007.
6. Transport arrangements
6.1 Teachers from the same school or area are kindly requested to share transport to the venue as the WCED cannot pay for the use of a number of vehicles by teachers from the same school.
6.2 Teachers claiming for the use of their own vehicles must bring the following to the workshop:
  • Persal number
  • Registration details of the vehicle used for transport
  • Vehicle kilometre readings

Teachers using public transport (bus and taxi services), must attach official receipts to their claims. Where teachers travel with learners in mini-buses, claims must be accompanied either by receipts issued or by a letter from their school principal stating expenses incurred. Teachers must submit verified claims at the end of the workshop.

7. The WCED sincerely hopes that the workshops will be an enriching and enjoyable experience for those attending.
