1. The introduction of the Specific Learning Pathways (SLP) within the Learning Area Arts and Culture in the Senior Phase is an initiative in the WCED to strengthen the articulation between Arts and Culture in Grade 9 (GET) with Grade 10 Arts subjects (FET). The SLP allows learners to select one art form in Grade 8 and 9 as the focus art form that they study in depth with the other three art forms integrated to ensure exposure and appreciation. The Specific Learning Pathways is recommended for schools offering the arts subjects in FET and especially the Arts and Culture focus schools.
2. In January 2007 the WCED ran a one week workshop introducing the SLP teachers to skills in each art form. Teachers requested that as a follow up more time be spent on their own specialist art form and learning how to integrate the other three art forms into it including the skills needed to teach the other three art forms.
3. A series of INSET workshops has been arranged during the third and fourth terms of 2007 for the Arts & Culture Focus School teachers and others who are implementing the Special Learning Pathways programme in Grades 8 and 9. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) School of Education, Arts Department (Mowbray Campus) in Cape Town will be facilitating this process in conjunction with WCED Curriculum Development.
4. Workshops will be conducted in an urban venue and in a rural venue for the South Cape Karoo teachers. There will be four urban sessions of four hours each for each of the four arts groups (dance, drama, music and visual art groups) on Friday afternoons and Saturdays (see Annexure A for venues and dates). The rural workshops will take place on two weekends for all SCK arts teachers starting from Friday afternoon to Sunday.
5. Teachers are required to bring the following with them on arrival at the workshops:
  • Casual clothing/tracksuits suitable for Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts workshops
  • WCED GET Arts & Culture Special Learning Pathways Programme (Grades 8 & 9). This document can be downloaded at: (or here)

6. WCED Arts and Culture teachers will be reimbursed for travel costs. It is therefore essential that each teacher brings the following to the workshops:
  • Persal number
  • Registration details of the vehicle used for transport and kilometre reading
  • Teachers making use of public transport (bus and train services) must attach official receipts to their claims. Where teachers make use of mini-buses, claims must be accompanied by either receipts issued or a letter from their principal stating expenses incurred. Each teacher must submit a separate verified claim.
7. Teachers attending the rural workshops will be refunded for travel and accommodation expenses.
8. Teachers must submit their claim forms to the CPUT manager at the workshop venues.
9. Teachers attending these workshops must register with CPUT. The attached registration form (Annexure B) must be submitted to Sandy Johnson at e-mail address johnsons@cput.ac.za or via fax to 021 680 1540 by 4 September 2007.

N.B. For logistical reasons, teachers who do not register by the due date will not be able to attend the workshops.

10. Principals are kindly requested to bring the contents of this curriculum minute to the attention of the arts specialist teachers.
