1. There is growing concern worldwide about the genocide being carried out in the Darfur region of the Sudan. In an effort to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis that has resulted in Darfur, the Cape Town Holocaust Centre is hosting an exhibition, Genocide and Darfur - A Multi-media Expo, from 17 - 28 January 2007. The exhibition includes images from Genocide and Darfur by the Aegis Trust, UK, and from the Darfur/Darfur Exhibition USA, as well as daily screenings of a documentary, Darfur Diaries: A Message from Home.
2. Post-apartheid South Africa became a beacon of hope for human rights movements and oppressed groups around the world and is playing an increasingly significant peace-keeping role in Africa. It is therefore important for young South Africans to become aware of the human rights crises in Africa and elsewhere in the world, as well as the role played by this country.
3. The Holocaust Centre has made available a Prayer for Darfur written by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a brief information sheet about the conflict in Darfur. These are both attached to this minute.
4. Principals are encouraged to use the prayer and information at an assembly early this term, and to bring the exhibition at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre to the attention of teachers and learners. An exhibition poster is also included with this minute.
