1. This year marks the final time in which the Senior Certificate examinations will be written according to the policy of Report 550, A Résumé of Instructional Programmes in Schools. Over the past few years, the MEC for Education has presented awards to schools and learners for excellence and improvement and will do so again this year at the function at which the Senior Certificate results are announced.
2. The criteria for the selection of awardees will not differ much from previous years. The awardees will be selected by a panel of officials, guided by the criteria listed in Addenda A and B and the list presented for approval to the Head: Education. The decision of the Head: Education will be final.
3. The Awards for the Senior Certificate examination focus on excellence and improvement within the context of the school, improvement in outcomes, overall excellence and improvement in the key areas of Mathematics and Science. The award function also recognises the efforts of learners who have achieved.
3.1 The criteria for the awards for schools are provided in Addendum A, and for learners in Addendum B.
3.2 In the event of the criteria not being fulfilled by schools or learners, the WCED reserves the right not to present an award for the particular category.
4. Incentives such as the Senior Certificate awards serve to encourage schools and learners to strive toward excellence and improvement, and it is hoped that schools view these awards as a celebration of achievement.
