The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is committed to quality education for all learners. Teachers, parents and caregivers all play an important role in supporting learners to achieve this goal.

Homework forms part of teaching and learning and, in support of this, the WCED published Homework Guidelines in August 2005.

Homework requires careful planning and support from principals, teachers, parents and learners. Efficient management of homework, accompanied by careful planning, guidance and control by all the parties involved, will ensure that it does not become a burden.

The WCED has produced a pamphlet giving parents guidance on how to support their children with their homework.

Schools in Quintiles 1 - 4 which offer Grades 1 - 3 will be provided with these pamphlets in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa. Principals are requested to distribute these pamphlets to parents.

School management teams and school governing bodies should use this opportunity to discuss with parents the importance of supporting their children with their homework.
