1. The selection and use of learning and teaching support material (LTSM), which includes textbooks, printed material, non-print material and electronic material, is a crucial element of curriculum development and management for the teacher. It is also essential that the learners have access to adequate and appropriate LTSM in order for successful learning to take place.
2. In this time of rapid curriculum change and development, the correct choice of LTSM is extremely challenging. In order for teachers to make informed choices with regard to LTSM, the Western Cape Education Department has put together a file consisting of 5 booklets. These booklets will assist teachers in making those choices.
3. Each booklet deals with a specific topic in the selection and use of LTSM:
  • Volume 1: Selection: General Guidelines
  • Volume 2: Selection Guidelines: Foundation Phase and Learning Areas Grades 4 - 9
  • Volume 3: Photocopying and Copyright Guidelines
  • Volume 4: Recommended Learning and Teaching Resources for Grades R - 9
  • Volume 5: Choosing Digital Resources for the Classroom
  • 4. Each school will be provided with 3 copies of the file: One for the principal, one for the member of the School Management Team who is responsible for procurement of textbooks and resources, and one for general use of the teachers.
    5. The booklet, Volume 2: Selection Guidelines: Foundation Phase and Learning Areas Grades R - 9, also provides guidelines for a staff development workshop that will assist in the development of the required knowledge and skills for the appropriate selection of LTSM.
    6. Volume 1 and 5 are being translated into Xhosa at the moment and will be delivered to the relevant schools as soon as possible.
    7. It is hoped that this file and its content will be of assistance to principals, teachers and, ultimately, learners.
