1. Learners should be assisted in their subject selection for Further Education and Training (FET) through career guidance. The career guidance that is offered should be relevant to the age group of the learners and link with the career guidance processes that are already implemented at the schools.
2. Life Orientation, one of the eight learning areas in the General Education and Training Band (GET), and a fundamental subject offering in the FET band, focuses specifically on
  • Orientation to the World of Work (GET)
  • Careers and Career Choices (FET)

These focus areas ensure that the learners will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and values embedded in these learning outcomes.

3. All teachers should be trained to become confident and competent in the career guidance that they offer to learners.
4. Schools must also be supported with the streaming of Grade 7 learners into the relevant focus schools, so that the learner make-up of the focus school reflects the ethos of the specific focus school.
5. Training courses in the PACE World of Work programme will be offered to
5.1 Grade 7 Life Orientation teachers at feeder schools to focus schools and
5.2 Grade 9 Life Orientation teachers who have not received training in this programme before.
6. A training course will also be offered in the PACE Advise and Refer programme to Grade 10 and 11 Life Orientation teachers who have not received training in this programme before.
7. ONE teacher per school is invited to attend each of these training sessions.
8. The training sessions will be arranged as follows:
1 September 2007: Grade 7 Life Orientation teachers
15 September 2007: Grade 9 Life Orientation teachers
5, 6 and 7 December 2007: Grade 10 and 11 Life Orientation teachers
9. The venue for all the training sessions will be at the Centre for E-Innovation (C-EI), at the Cape Teaching Institute, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River. The courses will commence promptly at 8:30 and end at 16:00.
10. Teachers from rural EMDCs will be reimbursed for travelling expenses. Teachers who intend to claim for these expenses must have the following information available at the course:
  • PERSAL number
  • Engine capacity of the vehicle used and year of manufacture
  • The kilometre distance from the school to the venue
11. Teachers from rural EMDCs who require accommodation must make their own arrangements. These educators must submit their claims before they leave on the last day of the course.
12. Principals are requested to return the completed registration form, Annexure A, to the Life Orientation Curriculum Planner, Mrs DJ Christiaans, at Fax No. 021 467 2258, by no later than 31 July 2007. This due date should be adhered to as the venue only has space for a limited number of teachers.
13. Principals are reminded that attendance of the above courses may be taken into consideration when completing a teacher's IQMS.
14. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of their Life Orientation teachers.
15. Please contact Mrs D Christiaans, Senior Curriculum Planner for Life Orientation (FET), at tel. 021 467 2589 or email: dchristi@pgwc.gov.za for more information.
