1. Life Orientation, a fundamental subject offering in the FET band to which all learners in Grades 10 to 12 will be exposed, has four focus areas, namely Personal Well-being, Citizenship Education, Recreation and Physical Well-being, and Careers and Career choices.
2. A three-day training and retraining course in the focus Personal Well-being will be offered on 25, 26 and 27 September 2007 in the various EMDCs. The course will commence promptly at 8:30 in the morning and will end at 16:00 in the afternoon on all three training days.
3. The course in Personal Well-being, called Today's Choices, which was offered in 2005 and 2006, has been updated for Grades 10 and 11 and the material for Grade 12 has now been included. It will have both a paper-based and a CD-ROM application and all schools will be issued with an electronic version, a teacher resource manual and a learner book.
4. Two Grade 10-12 Life Orientation teachers per school may attend this training, irrespective of whether they have attended before.
5. Rural teachers will be reimbursed for travelling expenses. Teachers who intend to claim for these expenses must have the following information available at the course:
  • PERSAL number
  • Engine capacity of the vehicle used and year of manufacture
  • The kilometre distance from the school to the venue
6. Teachers from rural EMDCs who require accommodation must make their own arrangements. Suitable bed and breakfast accommodation is recommended. These educators must submit their claims before they leave on the last day of the course.
7. Principals are requested to return the completed registration form to the Life Orientation Curriculum Adviser at the EMDC by no later than 31 July 2007. See Annexures A, B and C. Please indicate the preferred venue on the form.
8. Principals may contact Mrs D Christiaans at Head Office, telephone 021467 2589, fax 021 467 2258 or e-mail: dchristi@pgwc.gov.za, for more information.
9. Principals are reminded that attendance of the above courses may be taken into consideration when completing teachers' IQMSs.
10. The course is designed to support teachers in their preparation for and teaching of the Personal Well-being focus area of Life Orientation. It is therefore to their benefit to attend and the support of principals as curriculum leaders in their school is much appreciated.
