1. This Curriculum Minute gives clarity on the number of Mathematics papers, in terms of National Curriculum Statement prescriptions, for Grades 10 to 12 for the period 2007 to 2010.
2. The National Senior Certificate examinations in Mathematics will consist of two compulsory papers, i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 3 is an optional paper in which the Optional Mathematics Assessment Standards are examined.
3. Paper 3 will not count towards the certification of National Senior Certificate candidates. Candidates' achievements in Mathematics will be determined only through Papers 1 and 2. Candidates' results for Paper 3 will be issued on a separate statement of results. Institutions of higher education may use this statement when making decisions on admissions to certain faculties and programmes.
4. Paper 3 will remain optional for Grade 12 candidates from 2008 to 2010. It is anticipated that this paper will become compulsory after 2010. Teachers are encouraged to work towards teaching those aspects of mathematics examined in Paper 3, but this should not be done to the detriment of learners who cannot cope with Paper 3.
5. Please, refer to Appendix 2 in the Subject Assessment Guideline (January 2007) for the Optional Assessment Standards.
6. You are kindly requested to bring this notice to the attention of all Mathematics teachers of Grades 10 to 12, as well as the learners in those grades.
