1. Entrepreneurship in the NCS
1.1 The developmental outcomes of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS), and the Learning outcomes for Economic and Management Sciences and Business Studies in particular, focus strongly on entrepreneurship and on providing the opportunity for learners to acquire essential entrepreneurial knowledge and skills.
1.2 The assessment standards for Economic and Management Sciences and Business Studies also provide the opportunity for learners to gain practical experiences of business ventures.
2. Guidelines and Workbooks
2.1 The Western Cape Education Department has developed My Business: Guidelines for teachers and workbooks for learners to address the particular learning outcomes and assessment standards, as required by the new curriculum, and to enable learners to explore the possibility of starting a business - from idea generation up to the running of the business by learners, individually or collaboratively.
2.2 Teachers need to stimulate the creativity of learners in generating innovative business ideas ranging across products and services, especially taking indigenous knowledge and the performing arts into account.
2.3 Each school will be provided with a set of the My Business booklets, the copyright of which resides with the Western Cape Education Department. Schools may therefore make copies according to their needs.
2.4 The My Business workbooks may be used over a period of two years, i.e. Grades 8 & 9 in Economic and Management Sciences and Grades 10 & 11 in Business Studies to guide teachers and learners in developing entrepreneurial skills, while meeting the assessment standards.
3. Market Day
3.1 These workbooks will also provide guidance to enable teachers to fulfil the requirement that each school organise at least one business event (e.g. a market day) annually for Senior Phase and FET learners.
3.2 The WCED is working towards the establishment of a regional school market day, during the Western Cape Small Business Week.
4. Conclusion
4.1 The WCED trusts that this initiative will encourage learners, on leaving school, to set up business ventures so that they can stimulate job creation in the Western Cape and play a significant role in eradicating poverty.
4.2 Principals are requested to bring the content of this minute to the attention of all the teachers concerned and to support the entrepreneurship initiatives envisaged.
4.3 Enquiries may be directed to Economic and Management Sciences and Business Studies curriculum advisers at the relevant EMDC.
