1. Curriculum Minute 0026/2007 notified schools of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED)'s special project to supply one textbook per subject for each learner in Grade 12 in support of the implementation of NCS in Grade 12 for 2008.
2. To assist principals and teachers to make an informed choice when selecting these textbooks, the WCED will host a two-week travelling book-fair from 28 May to 7 June 2007. The fair, at which publishers will display their approved Grade 12 textbooks and teacher's guides, will visit each EMDC district. Refreshments will be available.
3. At the book fair, WCED curriculum officials in each of the subject fields will present half-hour information sessions on how to make a sound textbook selection. Curriculum advisers and planners will be on hand to assist principals and teachers with their textbook selection. Teachers attending these information sessions will receive a gift.
4. Transport expenses incurred by WCED-employed teachers attending the book fair will be reimbursed at normal government rates. Teachers from the same school are requested to travel together (3 per car where possible). Claims must be submitted to the WCED venue manager on the day of the book fair. Teachers are therefore requested to have their Persal numbers and the following details of their motor vehicle available at the book fair: make, model, engine capacity and odometer reading.

Teachers travelling by taxi or public transport must submit an affidavit signed by the principal stating the name and Persal number of the teacher, the cost of the fare (including return) and the purpose of the journey (i.e. to attend WCED book fair).

7. Textbooks play a significant role in ensuring sound teaching and learning. In order to ensure that appropriate selections are made and that funds are spent wisely, principals and teachers are strongly encouraged to attend the book fair closest to their schools. The support of principals will be appreciated.
