1. The National Science Week (NSW) is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), which is working in collaboration with the Department of Education.
1.1 The aims of the NSW are to engage our youth's excitement with science at an early age and to encourage them to develop an interest in studying mathematics and science subjects. While the emphasis is on our youth, it also aims to create awareness amongst those sectors of society which have an influence on the subject and career choices of learners.
1.2 The key objectives of the NSW are
  • to create awareness of the important role that science plays in people's daily lives;
  • to encourage our youth to consider studying and improving their performance in mathematics and science; and
  • to attract more youth into science, engineering and technology (SET) careers.
1.3 The theme of the NSW is "Tomorrow's Science & Technology are in our Youth's Hands".
2. The Western Cape Education Department would like to invite all schools to get involved in the National Science Week through the participation of educators and learners in the various events that have been organised by different science service providers throughout the province.
2.1 Principals are requested to make contact with the service providers, and to facilitate the participation of their schools in the programmes presented by the service providers within easy reach of their school communities.
