1. Scientific calculators are used by candidates writing Senior Certificate Mathematics and Physical Science examinations. Principals and chief invigilators must therefore ensure that the following security precautions are taken when these papers are written:
2. Approved calculators
2.1 Only approved scientific calculators may be used.
2.2 These calculators must be non-programmable and non-graphical.
2.3 Before an invigilator confiscates a calculator in the examination room, he or she must first consult with the Head of Department or the subject head of Mathematics or Physical Science delegated by the principal for this purpose. At examination centres that are not attached to schools, the chief invigilator must be consulted.
3. Calculator covers
3.1 There have been incidents in the past when crib notes were written on calculator covers and then brought into the examination room.
3.2 Principals and chief invigilators must take appropriate steps to prevent this practice. Where calculator covers are detachable, candidates must leave them outside the examination room. All non-detachable covers must be examined by invigilators before the examination session begins.
4. Invigilators must ensure that all calculators are switched off before the start of the examination session.
5. If a candidate needs to borrow a calculator during the course of an examination, the invigilator must ensure that the calculator is switched off before it is handed from the lender to the borrower, and also when the borrower returns it to the lender.
6. Kindly bring the contents of this minute to the attention of your chief invigilator, all teachers who teach Grades 11 and 12, and all learners in those grades.
