1. A key aspect of the Masifunde Maqela Reading Project is to encourage learners to read on a daily basis, thereby promoting a culture of reading in the classroom and the province as a whole.
2. For the Masifunde Maqela Reading Project (refer to Curriculum Development Minute 0001/2007), your school should have received the following:

  • A manual WCED Reading Programme: Guided Reading Programme for Grades 4-7 for each educator of Grade 4 to 7 classes

  • An orientation course for these educators in the Guided Reading programme

  • One or more graded reading packs (as determined by the school's provincial quintile)
3. In addition the following will be couriered to each school:

  • A copy of the Guided Reading manual for the principal

  • A DVD providing guidance on how to implement the Guided Reading programme in the classroom

  • A poster outlining the 8 steps of the Guided Reading programme

  • Bookmarks for learners on handling reading books
4. Principals are requested to ensure that learners derive full benefit from the materials provided. Further support or guidance may be obtained from the relevant curriculum officials at EMDCs.
