1. During the June/July school holidays of 2006 subject orientation workshops were held. These workshops dealt with new subject specific content.
2. The content modules proved extremely valuable for those teachers who attended and, following requests for a repeat of these modules, these modules will be offered for those teachers who missed the first round in June/July 2006, new teachers entering the profession in the FET band and those teachers who are teaching a new subject in Grades 10 to 12.
3. The repeat of these modules will take place during the April 2007 school holidays. In some subjects, adaptations have been made to accommodate newly identified needs. It is recommended that teachers who register should attend all modules. These modules will generally take place over a two-day period with exceptions as indicated in Annexure A.
4. Attendance is optional, based on teacher's academic and professional developmental needs.
5. The programme allows teachers to maximise their leave period as only two days, i.e., 2 and 3 April and / or 12 and 13 April will be utilised. In two subjects, a four day training programme is required due to the technical nature thereof (see Annexure A). These days have been identified to accommodate the Easter weekend and to permit those teachers who want to attend two different subjects, the opportunity to do so.
6. Annexure A provides a list of the subjects and modules that will be offered. It must be noted that certain subjects have been excluded in view of possible training by the national Department of Education during the June -July holidays, 2007, i.e., CAT and IT. In other instances where subjects have been omitted, teachers did not indicate a need for additional training.
7. The participants in the workshops will be limited to 70 teachers per subject, and will be offered in and around Cape Town. Teachers travelling from the rural areas will be refunded for accommodation and travel expenses in accordance with treasury regulations. Teachers will be required to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements once the workshops have been finalised and the registered teachers informed accordingly.
8. Teachers attending these workshops must register with Head Office. The attached registration form (Annexure B) must be submitted to Mr J. Randewijk at e-mail address jrandewijk@pgwc.gov.za or via fax 021 467 2258 by 9 March 2007. No late registrations will be accepted. For further information please contact Mr Randewijk at (021) 467 2564/2585.
9. Please note that in the event of registrations being fewer than 12 teachers per subject, no workshop will be conducted for that particular subject. The names of such teachers will be submitted to the EMDCs for follow-up guidance and support. Schools will be informed accordingly.
10. Once the registration has been completed, teachers will be informed of the venues where the workshops will take place.
11. Teachers who do not register will, for logistical reasons, not be permitted to attend the workshops, nor will they be reimbursed for any expenses incurred.
12. Principals are requested to ensure that all their learners are taught by appropriately trained teachers. Principals are kindly requested to adhere to the registration date of 9 March 2007 and to bring the contents of this Curriculum Minute to the attention of all Grade 10 to 12 teachers teaching the subjects indicated on Annexure A.
