The HIV/AIDS Life Skills Programme of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) cordially invites you to attend a 21/2-hour information and orientation workshop on peer education.

The purpose of this workshop is to share with you the WCED/GoLD peer education conceptual framework and implementation strategy, to enable your school to engage pro-actively with and support the service provider that is implementing the programme in your school.

The GoLD (Generation of Leaders Discovered) model of peer education is a rigorous, quality-assured approach to youth leadership in HIV prevention, risk behaviour reduction and school-community-based support for vulnerable youth.

In 2005 GoLD peer education was implemented in 94 secondary schools; 2006 will see the programme extended to 147 secondary schools in the province. (Please see attached list.)

Implementation of GoLD peer education in schools is largely (but not exclusively) funded by The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (administered by the Department of Health) and the HIV/AIDS Life Skills Conditional Grant (administered by the WCED). Additional financial support, coupled to local interest, could enable the WCED to expand this initiative to further schools. Non-participating schools are therefore encouraged to contact the programme in this regard.
