1. In recognition of its responsibility to manage the wellness of its employees, and the importance of providing support, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) designed the Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHWP) based on the perceived needs and desires of its employees. The EHWP provides the employees with support and guidance when they have to deal with life's challenges and opportunities. The programme is aimed at emphasising the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own health and well-being.
2. As a responsible employer, the WCED realises that a staff member with problems simply can not do his or her best at work unless wellness is made a part of its organisational culture. The WCED therefore needs to afford its employees an opportunity to feel they are in a constructive and supporting environment, where they are given a chance to be exposed to different ways of looking after their total well-being.
3. The WCED will therefore be holding an Employee Health and Wellness Day on 23 November 2006 at the Gardens Commercial School Hall, from 11:00 to 16:00, where the following services will be offered free to the employees:
  • Nutrition: Healthy eating habits

  • TB awareness

  • Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT)

  • Substance abuse awareness (SANCA)

  • Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)

  • Cholesterol check

  • Hypertension

  • Reflexology

  • Breast cancer examination

  • Counselling

  • Holistic massage therapy

  • Beauty care

  • Avon - Facials

  • Eye screening

4. By providing this opportunity, the WCED is acting pro-actively in helping its employees with the early detection of any illness that may hinder efficient service delivery.
5. Kindly note that the Health and Wellness Day will be structured in the following manner:
  • Employees will make use of the internal shuttle service provided by the Directorate: Human Resource Development

  • They will be collected from the Plein Street entrance and taken to the venue.

  • Each employee will receive an access voucher. These access vouchers will be disseminated to the secretaries of the directorates 48 hours prior to the event.

6. Please see the attached annexure. Employees wishing to attend the Wellness Day activities, must complete the form indicating the times at which they choose to attend and have it approved by the Director, to ensure that service delivery continues. The annexure should be returned to the Directorate: Human Resource Development by no later than 20 November 2006.
