A large number of permanently employed educators in the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) are under-qualified in terms of the minimum professional requirement for teachers to be registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

The NPDE is intended to provide those educators whose qualifications are currently valued at REQV 12 or below with a qualification valued at REQV 13, which is the minimum requirement.

The normal duration of the diploma course is two years of part-time study.
|
| 4. |
The diploma course will be offered by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
|
| 5. |
The National Department of Education, through the Netherlands Sectoral Budget, is offering bursaries that will cover the tuition cost of the diploma course to educators interested in upgrading their qualifications.

Under-qualified educators whose qualifications are currently classified as Relative Educational Qualification Value (REQV) 12 are invited to apply for this bursary.
|

A total of 208 students will be accommodated in 2006, and will be selected as follows:
70 Foundation and 34 Intermediate Phase educators from the metropole EMDCs
70 Foundation and 34 Intermediate Phase educators from the rural EMDCs
NB. Contact sessions for educators from the rural EMDCs will be conducted in Wellington. The bursary does not cover travel expenses.
