1. The 16 Days of Activism: No Violence Against Women is an annual United Nations campaign, held this year between 25 November (International Day of No Violence Against Women) and 10 December 2006 (International Human Rights Day). The South African Government runs a parallel no-violence-against-children campaign.
2. The purpose of the campaign is to generate increased awareness amongst South Africans of violence perpetuated against women and children, of how it manifests itself within South African society and of its impact on these vulnerable groups.
3. In an attempt to raise awareness amongst Western Cape Education Department personnel, the Human Resource Development Directorate has developed a 16-day calendar and each employee is encouraged to participate in the activities noted on the calendar. It is hoped that, by doing so, employees will become aware of the plight of maltreated women and children in our country, and do all they can to defend the rights of the defenceless.
4. Attached to this minute is the calendar for the 16 Days of Activism.
