When a school is selected for inclusion in the Khanya Programme, one of the first things that must be done is to determine the curriculum needs and priorities of the school and then to choose software to support those needs. The selection of software is also subject to the following:

1. Only software products on the WCED's recommended list of educational software may be considered for purchase with funds received from the WCED. This list has been compiled by the Directorate: Curriculum Development, in collaboration with the research and development staff in the Chief Directorate: e-Innovation in the Department of the Premier (who are responsible for technical matters relating to Khanya installations). The list changes from time to time, when new products are evaluated, and will be made accessible on the WCED website at http://curriculum.wcape.school.za/.
2. Schools will have a period of one month in which to investigate various software offers, either by inviting representatives to make presentations, or by consulting other schools who may already be using these products. The Khanya project manager, ADESSA ( http://www.adessa.org.za ), the Curriculum Development Directorate, or other schools may be able to assist in advising what software is available and appropriate for curriculum purposes. Guidelines for ICT Integration with NCS Subjects in Grades 10-12 was sent to all schools last year, and is available on the WCED website at http://curriculum.wcape.school.za/.  A similar guideline will be developed for GET in 2007. The teaching staff should be involved in the selection of software for their learning areas and subjects.
3. During consultations between the school and the relevant Khanya project manager about the implementation of ICT in the school, a decision will also be taken as to who will carry the cost of which items, including the software selected. The decision will be taken on the educational software product(s) that will be most appropriate for the initial needs of the school. This decision should be recorded in the minutes of the school governing body meeting at which the decision is confirmed.
4. All of the decisions listed above will be incorporated in a project plan for the establishment of a computer facility at the school. This project plan, which must be signed by the relevant authorities, will then form the basis on which computer facilities will be provided to the school.
5. Any subsequent acquisition of software will be at the discretion of the school. This may be funded through the Norms and Standards Funding for Schools, in which case the software must be selected from the recommended software list. Software not on the list may be funded either by the school or a third party donor.
6. Schools who are using or who know about good educational software not included in the recommended list, are asked to e-mail the name and publisher and any other relevant information to the Curriculum Development Directorate for evaluation and possible inclusion in the list. The contact person is Ms A Lowenherz at alowen@pgwc.gov.za
