1.2 Mark sheets for the aforementioned subjects are sent directly to curriculum advisers. The remaining mark sheets must be made available to the curriculum advisers on the day of moderation. The moderated marks must be transferred to the departmental mark sheets by the curriculum advisers.
2. AWARDING OF CASS MARKS

A mark must be awarded to every learner whose examination number appears on the mark sheet. This also applies to learners who

  • Text here.were expelled or temporarily suspended from school.

  • have applied for a change of centre.

  • were absent for a prolonged period during the year.

  • were absent on the day of moderation.

3. LEARNERS WHO ARE ABSENT AND THOSE WITH NO CASS MARKS
3.1 Under no circumstances may a learner’s marks be omitted. If a learner has completed one or more CASS items, but has not handed in one or more of the required items, the learner must receive a “0” for each of the components not handed in. The maximum total is not adjusted – the learner is thus penalised for not completing the work that was required.
3.2 Learners who completed no CASS tasks at all during the year are to be given a “999” on the mark sheet. This is the only instance where “999” may be entered on the CASS mark sheets.
3.3 Where a learner was absent with a medical certificate for any component, his/her maximum CASS mark must be adjusted accordingly. The learner is then given a mark out of a reduced total, which is then converted to the correct maximum mark.
4. SUBJECT AND GRADE CHANGES

In cases where a subject or grade change has been approved by the Department, the change (subject name and grade) must be indicated next to the learner’s name and examination number. Write "888" in the mark column and write the learner’s mark in the column next to the mark column.

5. LEARNERS WITH SPEECH AND/OR HEARING BARRIERS

Learners with speech and/or hearing barriers must, in lieu of the oral mark, receive a pro rata mark based on the marks for written work in the June and September examinations.

6. RESPONSIBILITY OF PRINCIPALS WITH REGARD TO THE COMPLETION OF THE MARK SHEETS

Principals must ensure that all learners in their schools have been given a CASS mark. Submission of CASS marks after completion of the moderation will not be accepted by the Department.

7. RETURN DATE

Assessment co-ordinators are requested to ensure that the completed mark sheets reach the Directorate: Examinations by 30 October 2006.

8. REFERRING QUERIES

Principals are requested not to refer learners without CASS marks directly to the Department after the release of the results. The normal procedure via the assessment co-ordinators at the EMDC must be followed.
