1. A needs analysis survey conducted across the EMDCs indicates a need for basic accounting training for Grade 8 & 9 EMS teachers who have no formal accounting training as part of their teaching qualifications and who are anticipating problems with coping with the teaching, learning and assessment of Learning Outcome 3 and the related assessment standards that deal with Accounting.
2. In response to this need, a four-day workshop is being planned for Monday, 8 January to Thursday, 11 January 2007 for Grade 8 & 9 EMS teachers, as announced in Curriculum Development Minute 0091/2006. Competent and experienced EMS/Accounting curriculum advisers have been identified to present these workshops, which will provide teachers with the basic knowledge and skills needed to teach Accounting at Grade 8 & 9 level. Attendance is highly recommended for teachers without a formal tertiary accounting qualification who will be teaching EMS in the Senior Phase in 2007 in schools. The workshop is scheduled for the beginning of the year so that the teachers will be equipped right from the start of the academic year with the relevant knowledge and skills. Please see Annexure A for further detailed information.
3. Getting learners off to a good start in Grade 8 & 9 is of paramount importance. They must receive competent teaching and assessment relating to the Accounting assessment standards. Principals are therefore, requested to encourage their teachers to make use of this opportunity.
4. In order for the WCED to provide sufficient copies of workshop materials, it is essential that teachers register for the workshop by 27 October 2006. Schools must therefore complete the information in Annexure B and submit it to Mr JO Gordon by 27 October 2006 either electronically at jegordon@pgwc.gov.za or per fax to 021 467 2258.
5. We sincerely appreciate your early co-operation in this regard.
