1. The Subject Assessment Guidelines for subjects in the National Curriculum Statement (Grades 10 – 12) recommend that schools conduct two examinations during a calendar year. One examination would preferably be a mid-year examination, while the other would be done at the end of the year.
2. The Western Cape Education Department strongly recommends that no examination be conducted during September 2006 and that the time be spent on teaching learners study skills and on concentrating on normal teaching and learning. It is suggested that a series of lessons totalling about 5 hours be conducted at the school to help learners to acquire the valuable skills necessary for writing examinations.
2.1 Schools that decide to utilise this time on teaching study skills are invited to complete the attached form to order one Study Skills booklet for each Grade 10 learner. The school can also order one booklet for each Life Orientation teacher in Grade 10 (maximum of 3).
2.2 Teachers must request help from the chief curriculum adviser at their educational management and development centre (EMDC) if they require further assistance in mediating the booklet.
2.3 The booklets will be supplied from Edumedia in Mowbray, Cape Town, and will be funded by the Directorate: Curriculum Development.
3. Schools are urged to send in their order forms by fax to 021 685 7421 or by e-mail to edumedia@pgwc.gov.za by 25 August 2006.
