1. Circular 0066/2005 of November 2005 and Curriculum Development Minutes DCD/0013/2006 of February 2006 and DCD/0033/2006 of March 2006 refer to the NCS orientation courses to be held for teachers of Grades 8 and 9.
2. Many teachers attended courses from 10 - 14 July 2006, but, as previously indicated, the courses will be repeated in each of the eight learning areas in September 2006. These courses are intended for those Grade 8 and 9 teachers who teach a second learning area.
3. In April, schools registered teachers for the July and September courses. Principals are requested to confirm the registration of the teachers for the September training by completing and submitting the attached list. Please note that teachers are required to sign the list.
4. A number of teachers who were registered for the July courses did not attend. This resulted in fruitless expenditure for the WCED as material was printed for these teachers, appropriate venues hired, meals ordered, etc. It was indicated that teachers who registered but did not attend would be required to pay the cost of the training. However, in the light of the training arranged for September, an opportunity is being made available for those teachers who registered for July but did not attend, to transfer to the September course. Note that further opportunities cannot be provided for teachers to honour their registration. Teachers who wish to transfer to September are kindly requested to add their names to the attached registration form.
5. In the light of the current concern that Grade 10 learners are under-prepared for Grade 10, teachers who have not yet attended orientation are strongly advised to attend. The orientation will take place from 26 to 29 September 2006.
6. Principals are requested to complete the attached registration form (Annexure A) and to fax or e-mail it to their EMDC by 18 August 2006. When e-mailing, kindly use the following subject heading: Grade 8 & 9 NCS Orientation. Annexure A: Gr. 8 & 9 September 2006.
7. Enquiries about the training courses may be addressed to the chief curriculum adviser at the relevant EMDC, or to Mr Jerome Gordon at Head Office at telephone 021 467 2566 or at e-mail address jegordon@pgwc.gov.za
8. Annexure C contains the contact details of the EMDCs.
9. The attached Annexure B provides a list of venues for the Grade 8 & 9 NCS Orientation courses per EMDC.
10. Principals are reminded of the following:
  • The programme is tailored to meet the needs of Grade 8 and 9 teachers when implementing the NCS in Grade 8 and 9 in 2007.

  • Only teachers who have confirmed attendance through prior registration will be expected to attend. (We will assume this for planning purposes.)

  • Please note that all workshops will start at 08:00 and end at 16:00 each day, except on Friday, when the workshop will end at 12:00.

  • Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Transport claims for WCED-paid educators must be completed in full at the workshop.

  • Participants are requested to bring the documentation listed below in paragraph 12, as well as a pen and notepaper.

11. Certificates of attendance will be issued in due course to teachers who
  • provide proof of their Persal numbers (WCED employees) or their ID numbers (SGB employees) by producing a photocopy of a salary slip or of an ID document; and

  • are present for the full duration of the course and sign the attendance register daily.

12. In order to achieve maximum benefit from this workshop, teachers are earnestly requested to study the following documents prior to the workshop:
  • The Overview of the Revised National Curriculum Statement (Policy)

  • The Learning Area Statement (Policy) for the learning programme that they will be developing

  • The Teacher’s Guide for the Development of Learning Programmes for the learning programme that they will be developing.

Teachers must bring these documents to the September courses.

13. The EMDCs will inform schools which venues their teachers should attend.
14. Your support will be appreciated.
