Who should attend: Grades R to 9 Mathematics teachers

1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) invites Grade R to Grade 9 Mathematics teachers to participate in the Mathematics Solutions Conference either as presenters or participants. This confirms the communication issued in June 2006 by the Human Resource Development Subdirectorate: Cape Teaching Institute, in collaboration with the Directorate: Curriculum Development.
2. Purpose

The purpose of this mathematics conference is to provide examples of ways in which mathematics can be effectively taught to learners.

3. Information for Presenters
3.1 Teachers who are interested in presenting a mathematics lesson or “a best practice” at the conference should be guided by the following:
  • The lesson or ”How I teach it” session must be based on the Grades R to 9 Mathematics National Curriculum Statement.

  • The lesson should teach an aspect of the Mathematics syllabus for a particular grade.

  • Conference participants should be involved in a presentation or lesson.

  • Duration: 40 minutes. Allow 5 - 10 minutes for group discussion or questions.

  • Venues will have loose tables and chairs, an overhead projector and chalkboard.

  • All worksheets will be printed in a separate volume of conference proceedings. This means that a presenter does not need to bring additional copies of materials, unless participants are required to cut, fold, etc. pages of worksheets.

  • All materials should be typed and printed on a laser printer, if possible. The WCED will duplicate the material.

3.2 If you are interested in presenting an item on the 6 and 7 October, please complete Annexure A and fax it to Mr A. Lamprecht at fax number 021 900 5175 or 021 900 5162, or e-mail it to alamprec@pgwc.gov.za by 31 August 2006.
4. Information for Participants
4.1 Teachers not wishing to present their work, but who would like to attend the conference, are requested to fill in their details on the school list in Annexure B.
4.2 Return the completed Annexure B to Mr A. Lamprecht at e-mail address alamprec@pgwc.gov.za, or fax it to Jackie Bokveldt at fax no. 021 900 5175 by 1 September 2006. This is an extension to the cut-off date given in the first communication sent to the schools by the Cape Teaching Institute. The 100 teachers who have already registered in response to the first communication do not have to re-register.
4.3 The programme will include plenary panel discussions and parallel sessions presented by participants. Schools registering for the conference will receive details of the conference programme by 15 September 2006.
5. Logistics

Participants or presenters from the rural EMDCs travelling further than 120 km per return trip may stay overnight in the Cape Teaching Institute’s hostel accommodation on Friday, 6 October. Accommodation will be provided by the WCED. Travelling costs will not be covered by the WCED.

6. The WCED hopes that this conference will be an enriching and exciting experience for all Mathematics teachers attending it.
