1. Curriculum Development Minute 0039/2006 indicated that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will supply textbooks for Grades 8, 9 and 11 in the following selected language and science subjects and learning areas to support the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in these grades:

Languages: Afrikaans First Additional
Mathematics
Mathematical Literacy
Natural Science
Physical Science 
2. This minute contains the preliminary lists for Grade 8 and Grade 11. The Grade 9 list is not yet complete, but will be provided at the NCS orientation courses for Grade 8 and 9 teachers (10-14 July).
3. Publishers have been invited to display their books at these courses. Teachers are urged to take the attached lists to the orientation/training sessions and to use the opportunity to discuss the selection of books with colleagues. Space has been provided on the lists for teachers to note their comments so that an informed choice can be made on return to school in the new term.
4. Attached to this minute are also the criteria used in selecting books for the Special Project in order to assist teachers to make a suitable selection of books for their learners.
5. The WCED is committed to increasing access to good quality textbooks, as research has shown that access to textbooks is essential to support good teaching and learning. Teachers and schools are therefore urged to take great care in selecting suitable books from the lists provided.
6. A circular will be sent to schools by 17 July 2006 containing the final lists for Grades 8, 9 and 11 in the learning areas and subjects indicated above. The circular will also contain detailed instructions for the ordering of these Special Project textbooks.
7. Schools will be required to place orders for these textbooks by no later than 12:00 on 8 August 2006. No late orders will be accepted. The WCED will not pay for orders placed after 8 August 2006.
8. Principals are asked to note that schools are required to make use of a single book supplier for all the Special Project textbooks.
9. Kindly also note that when ordering textbooks, principals will be requested to provide information with regard to the school’s textbook retrieval procedures, and the success thereof.
