"I know what the assessment standard says in the official curriculum, but I wish someone would tell me how much detail to cover in a given section of mathematics." Teachers of mathematics who have expressed this wish will now find help on a CD recently produced by the Curriculum Development Directorate. The CD, entitled Illustrative Examples for Gr R - 9 NCS Mathematics, provides teachers with appropriate examples of the assessment standards for each of Grades R to 9.

EMDCs will be responsible for the distribution of the CD by the end of August 2006. The CD will either be handed to a Mathematics teacher from your school at a cluster or learning area meeting, or it will be handed to the principal at an EMDC meeting. The receiver will be expected to sign for receipt of the CD. If your school has not received a copy of this CD by 31 August 2006, please contact the Mathematics curriculum adviser at your EMDC.

The purpose of the examples on this CD is to clarify assessment standards to teachers.

Teachers should note that these examples are merely a guide to the assessment standards. The CD does not replace the textbook. If a teacher covers only the examples on the CD in class, the learners will not have had sufficient exposure to the curriculum.

The WCED hopes that this material will assist teachers to implement the National Curriculum Statement.
