1. Further to Curriculum Minutes 0021/2006 and 0040/2006, the following pertains to the registration of Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) teachers for the June – July subject content training sessions.
2. The CAT and IT training will be presented by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Bellville Campus, as an outsourced service provider funded by the national Department of Education. Training will include practical sessions using the applications.
3. Provincial training programmes for CAT and IT
3.1 The training is open to teachers currently teaching CAT and IT.
3.2 The training programme for each subject, as developed by the service provider, spans over a seven (7) day period, and totals 64 hours.
3.3 The CAT training starts at 14h30 on Sunday, 25 June, and will run to 16h30 on Saturday, 1 July 2006. CAT Level 1 and CAT Level 2 will be offered simultaneously.
3.4 The IT training starts from 14h30 Sunday 02nd July to 16h30 Saturday 08th July 2006. Only IT Level 1 will be offered during the June school vacation
3.5 Please refer to Annexure A for daily course times, assessment and certification.
4. Participants for CAT
4.1 As CAT is a new subject and will accommodate teachers from Typing, Computyping and Computer Studies Standard Grade (SG), the content gap for teachers from these different backgrounds will differ. Therefore, for training purposes all content will be considered new. CAT further originates from and is a subset of the broader knowledge domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
4.2 To accommodate the different backgrounds and skills of teachers, the training will be done at three levels. There are learning assumptions for each level (See Annexure B for a list of pre-requisite skills and knowledge for the different courses.):
4.2.1 The basic course (CAT Level 1) targets novice teachers (new to the subject), Typing teachers and teachers with very little background.
4.2.2 The intermediate course (CAT Level 2) targets teachers currently teaching Computyping.
4.2.3 The advanced course (CAT Level 3) targets teachers currently teaching Computer Studies SG.
4.3 Teachers doing the basic course in 2006 can enrol for the intermediate course in 2007 and the advanced course in 2008. Teachers doing the intermediate course in 2006 can enrol for the advanced course in 2007. Teachers doing the advanced course will not need to attend training courses in 2006, but will attend the advanced course in 2007.
4.4 Teachers completing CAT level 2 and level 3 will receive exemption for the CAT-related subjects if they enter for the ACE course offered at Tshwane University of Technology. They will only have to complete the education-related subjects to qualify for an Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE certificate) for CAT. The courses are registered on a NQF level 5, i.e. 24 credits.
5. Participants for IT
5.1 IT draws from Computer Studies Higher Grade (HG) and originates from and is a subset of the broader knowledge domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
5.2 The training will be done at two (possibly three) levels:
5.2.1 The basic (IT Level 1) course targets novice teachers (new to the subject) and teachers with very little background.
5.2.2 The advanced (IT Level 2) course targets teachers currently teaching Computer Studies HG.
5.3 Teachers doing the basic course in 2006 can enrol for the advanced course in 2007. Teachers doing the advanced course will not need to attend training courses in 2007.
