The moderation of site-based assessment by the EMDC is a necessary quality assurance procedure, as it checks for policy compliance and allows valuable feedback to educators and centre managers.

EMDC advisers currently use the ABAS 3a/b moderation tool to moderate learner and educator portfolios at adult learning centres.

The site-based assessment marks presented by centres on the ABAS 2 mark sheet are approved by the EMDC curriculum advisers, who transfer the marks to the computer schedule supplied by the Examinations Directorate.

UMALUSI-ABET Level 4 verification meeting
|
| 2.1 |
Three UMALUSI moderators will visit the Western Cape on 22 and 23 May 2006 to verify the moderation of the ABET Level 4 site-based assessment. They will verify the moderation of portfolios for the following learning areas:
Mathematical Literacy
Natural Sciences
Life Orientation

| 2.2 |
The agenda for this meeting accompanies this minute and the ABET curriculum advisers are requested to attend this meeting at the Cape Teaching Institute in Kuilsriver. They should bring at least 10% of the moderated portfolios per learning area per centre for the three learning areas mentioned above.

Educator portfolios per centre per learning area must accompany the learner portfolios, as the UMALUSI moderators will moderate a sample of portfolios as part of the verification process.

| 2.4 |
Curriculum Advisers must complete the computer schedule of all centres for the three learning areas before arriving at the meeting on 22 May 2006.

Feedback meeting to educators
|
| 3.1 |
In addition to the verification meeting, the UMALUSI moderators will host a special feedback meeting for educators who teach the above three learning areas. These educators are invited to attend the meeting at the teachers’ centre on 23 May from 13:30 to 15:30.

| 3.2 |
EMDCs are requested to inform Mr J Parbhoo (jparbhoo@pgwc.gov.za) by 17 May 2006 of the number of educators in their districts who wish to attend the meeting.

The ABET curriculum advisers are requested to make every effort to attend this meeting, as their presence at this meeting is vital to providing feedback to centres.
