1. One of the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum Statement Grades 10-12 (General): Life Orientation states that "the learner is able to demonstrate self-knowledge and the ability to make informed decisions regarding further study, career fields and career pathing".
2. The WCED is committed to ensuring that all FET learners are able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that are embedded within this learning outcome by exposing them to a wide variety of careers.
3. To respond to the national call to take a girl-child to work on 25 May 2006, the WCED would like to request that all schools become involved in this project by introducing girls to a career in teaching.
4. It is recommended that every school select ten Grade 10 girls with an interest in teaching, and expose them to a programme that will enhance their interest in the teaching career.
5. Schools are free to decide on the format of the programme, but the following recommendations could be considered:
5.1 Allow the selected girls to visit the classrooms of a neighbouring primary school to observe the teaching of younger learners.
5.2 Arrange for the girls to visit to an institution of higher education that trains students for the teaching profession.
5.3 Arrange for the girls to visit a school where they will be able to observe the teaching of children with special educational needs.
6. Schools are welcome to make the same arrangement for boys later in the year.
7. Principals are kindly requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all teachers in WCED schools.
